Critical BO Width

Using the Critical BO Width form (Wellbore Stability > Setup > Tools > Critical BO Width) you can calculate the critical BO width based on the wellbore trajectory or curvature.

To calculate the critical BO width

  1. Choose between the Default calculation method or base the calculation on the rock types with the rock type dependent option.
    • If you choose the Default method, the critical breakout width is set to the value specified for a vertical well where the well inclination is 0° and to the value specified for a horizontal well where the well inclination is 90°. For slanted well sections the critical breakout width is linearly interpolated between these two values.
    • When selecting the <rock type dependent> option, the Edit button becomes active, giving you access to the Rock Dependent Constants form, where you can specify the input parameters for the rock types included in the calculation.
  2. Specify the maximum failure for a vertical well trajectory.
  3. Specify the maximum failure for a horizontal well trajectory.
  4. Click (Re)Calculate to calculate the critical BO width based on your input.

When you are working with an existing calculation, the (Re)Calculate button activates when adjustments to the inputs are made, so that you can recalculate. The resulting calculation is available in the JewelExplorer in the Width Angle group of the log types folder.

To change the default name of the created log, double click in the log field. The background turns blue, indicating you can edit the text. When done, click the green check mark to apply the changes.
